In school, he was a bright pupil and dreamt of becoming

an Olympic-level swimmer.

He excelled at swimming, becoming a teenage standout

in the 50, 100 and 400 meters freestyle and aiming to make

the 1992 Olympic Games as a member of the United States Team.



However, when Hurricane Hugo destroyed the island's only

Olympic size swimming pool in 1989, forcing him to swim in the

ocean, he soon lost enthusiasm due to his fear of sharks.

Moreover, he was dealt another emotional blow

when his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer

and died one day before his 14th birthday.

In her last days, she made him and his sisters promise to finish college

with a degree, which would later explain his reluctance to leave college early.



He never swam competitively again,

but was inspired by his brother-in-law to turn to basketball.

하지만 그는 이 시련을 겪은 후 세계 최고의 농구선수가 되었고 NBA의 역사를 써나가는 중이다.
(뭐 내 개인적인 생각으로는 던컨이 계속 수영을 했어도 잘했을거 같긴 하지만)
