Eureka Moment: Caltech Wins a Game

Nobody understands the laws of probability better than the cerebral players at Caltech. After 207 consecutive losses, the Beavers finally won an N.C.A.A. men’s basketball game Saturday night; their first victory since 1996.


“It was a combination of a sense of relief and happiness for the kids,” said Coach Roy Dow, in his fifth season as coach. “They were euphoric.”


Forward Travis Haussler, who at 6 feet 7 inches is the tallest player on Caltech’s roster, had 27 points, and Matt Dellatorre added 24. The victory was Caltech’s first in 60 games over all, including games against non-N.C.A.A. foes.


“We expected to win a game, but not like this,” Dow said of the 29-point margin.


Now the Beavers (1-10) hope to end an even longer streak: They have lost 245 consecutive games in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, a streak going back almost 22 years.


Caltech is renowned for its programs in science and math. Although it attracts some of the nation’s best and brightest minds, it does not necessarily draw the athletically gifted. Many of Dow’s players did not play varsity basketball in high school.
